Baby quaggans crochet tutorial (eng ver)

Hello guys! Some of you may remember that just over year ago I made two little quaggans - probably the сutest creatures from Guild Wars 2 universe - and did a tutorial in russian. There were many requests for English tutorial, and finally I managed to do it.
Important note: English is not my first language (or even second) and I have no practice on writing tutorials in it, so don't mind to comment.

Matherials, parts and terms

So lets start with the materials you’ll need to crochet male baby quaggan.
  • First of all you’ll need blue, light blue and white yarn. 50 gr of each color should be enough.
  • Next you’ll need something to stuff in your toy: cotton or anything you like.
  • You’ll also need 2 beads or buttons for eyes.
  • And of course a hook of an appropriate size and some contrast yarn to mark important stitches.
  • And you'll probably need a needle to sew all the parts together.

Our little quaggan will consist of the following parts:
  • Body (“belly” on the pic).
  • Eyes (2).
  • Hands (yes, it's actually arms) (2).
  • Legs (2).
  • One big spot.
  • Two midsized spots.
  • Three small spots.
And also some terms:
  • Ch is for Chain.
  • Sc is for Single Crochet.
  • Sc2tog - Single crochet 2 together or a single crochet decrease.
  • Sl St id for Slip Stitch.
  • 2 in 1 Sc - Single crochet 2 times in one stitch or crochet increase.
Now lets get to work! All parts of baby quaggan are crocheted in the round. To avoid losing end of the row, I usually use a bright contrasting yarn marker. Number of stiches in the row is given in brackets in the end of row description.

Body (back)

Begin with light blue yarn.

Row 1. Chain 6, connect into ring with slip stich  (6)
Row 2. (2 in 1 sc)* repeat all row long (12)
Row 3. (1 sc, 2 in 1 sc)* repeat all row long. (18)
Row 4. (2 sc, 2 in 1 sc)* repeat all row long. (24)
Row 5. (3 sc, 2 in 1 sc)* repeat all row long. (30)
Row 6. (4 sc, 2 in 1 sc)* repeat all row long. (36)
Row 7. (5 sc, 2 in 1 sc)* repeat all row long. (42)
Row 8. (6 sc, 2 in 1 sc)* repeat all row long. (48)
Row 9 - 18. Simply single crochet. (48)

Now we need to separate the belly (it will be white) from the back (we will continue it in blue). To do this, mark the current stitch, count 16 stitches from it (not including current marked) and mark 17th. So the back will have 32 stiches, and the belly - 16.

Row 19 - 33. Turn and single crochet from one marker to another, then turn again and continue... (32)

Here is what you should have.
Now lets continue with the tail part.

It’s (tail’s) lenght is 18 stitches. And here we will need markers again. Mark the 7th stitch from each side and now you have 18 stitched between markers. You can cut off the yarn, then connect it on the marked stitch, or you can slip stitch 7 times till the marker. Continue between markers.

Row 34. Sc in back loop 18 times (18)

Row 35 - 36.
Sc 18 times (18)

Now it’s time to decrease.

Row 37. 1 sc, sc2tog, 12 sc, sc2tog,1sc. (16)
Row 38. 1 sc, sc2tog, 10 sc, sc2tog,1sc. (14)
Row 39. 1 sc, sc2tog, 8 sc, sc2tog,1sc. (12)
Row 40. 1 sc, sc2tog, 6 sc, sc2tog,1sc. (10)
Row 41. 1 sc, sc2tog, 4 sc, sc2tog,1sc. (8)
Row 42. 1 sc, sc2tog, 2 sc, sc2tog,1sc. (6)
Row 43. 1 sc, sc2tog, sc2tog,1sc. (4)
Row 44. 1 sc, sc2tog, 1sc. (3)
Row 45. sc3tog (1). Cut off.

Arms

Row 1. Chain 6, connect into ring with slip stitch (6)
Row 2. 2 in 1 sc all row long (12)
Row 3 - 14. Simply simple crochet (12).

Don’t cut off and stuff if you like. Now we will continue with cute tiny fingers. Flatten the part like on the pics below. Now we have 5 pair of stitches and one stitch on the left fold and one on the right. Actually I’m not quite sure how to explain it, so i hope the pics will help.

Row 15. Chain 3, do sc in the 2nd and 3rd stitch from the hook, and then goes the tricky part: sc in the pair of stitches like on the second pic above. Now we have the first finger.

Then sc in the second pair of stitches, chain 3, do sc in the 2nd and 3rd stitch from the hook, sc in the same pair. We have the second finger now.

Sc in 3rd and 4th pair, chain 3, do sc in the 2nd and 3rd stitch from the hook, sc in the same (4th) pair. It’s the third finger.

Sc in 5th pair, chain 3, do sc in the 2nd and 3rd stitch from the hook, sc in the same (5th) pair. It’s the fourth finger. Cut of the yarn and hide.

Legs

Row 1. Chain 6, connect into ring with slip stitch (6)
Row 2. 2 in 1 sc all row long (12)
Row 3. (1 sc, 2 in 1 sc)* repeat all row long. (18)
Row 4 - 13. Simply simple crochet (18)

Now we need to divide stitches into 2 parts (9+9) using markers. See the pic below. One half will be toes, another - heel. Heel will be done with simple sc, and for toe we will be increasing.
Row 14. Toe half: 2 in 1 sc, 1 sc, 2 in 1 sc, 1 sc, 2 in 1 sc, 1 scheel half: 9 sc (14+9)
Row 15. Toe half: 4 sc, 2 in 1 sc, 1 sc, 2 in 1 sc, 2 in 1 sc, 1 sc, 2 in 1 sc, 4 sc; heel half: 9 sc (18+9)
Row 16. Toe half: 18 sc in back loops; heel half: 9 sc (18+9)
Row 17. Toe half: (sc2tog)* 9 times in back loops; heel half: 9 sc (9+9)
Row 18. (1 sc, sc2tog)* repeat all row long (12)

Stuff.

Row 19. (sc 2 tog)* repeat all row long (6)

Tighten, cut off, hide.

Spots

Spots are the easiest part. All spots have ane pattern. For the big one you should crochet all 4 rows. For the midsized - stop after 3 rows. For small - 2 rows are enough.

Row 1. Chain 6 with the darker blue yarn, connect into ring with slip stitch (6)
Row 2. 2 in 1 sc all row long (12)
Row 3. (1 sc, 2 in 1 sc)* repeat all row long. (18)
Row 4. (1 sc, 2 in 1 sc)* repeat all row long. (27)

Body (belly)

Take white yarn and our unfinished body part. Connect yarn to the first marked stitch of the gap we left for the belly. See the pic below. The width of the belly should be 18 stitches.

Row 1. Sc all gap long beginning and ending with the marked stitches (18)
Row 2 - 15. Also sc all gap long (18)
Row 16. Sc in the front loops (18)
Row 17 - 26. Sc all gap long (18)

Time to decrease and for the tail.

Row 27 - 30. Again sc all gap long (18)
Row 31. 1 sc, sc2tog, 12 sc, sc2tog, 1 sc (16)
Row 32. 1 sc, sc2tog, 10 sc, sc2tog, 1 sc (14)
Row 33. 1 sc, sc2tog, 8 sc, sc2tog, 1 sc (12)
Row 34. 1 sc, sc2tog, 6 sc, sc2tog, 1 sc (10)
Row 35. 1 sc, sc2tog, 4 sc, sc2tog, 1 sc (8)
Row 36. 1 sc, sc2tog, 2 sc, sc2tog, 1 sc (6)
Row 37. 1 sc, sc2tog, sc2tog, 1 sc (4)
Row 38. 1 sc, sc2tog, 1 sc (3)
Row 39. sc3tog (1)

Cut off.

Joining all the staff together

Finally it's time to sew all the parts together. First of all you should remove all remaining markers and hide all yarn ends. Inside out sew the belly to the back, but leave a little gap somewhere at the tail, then turn out through this gap, stuff (don't do it too hard) the body and sew the gap. Then sew eyes, spots, arms and legs to the toy. Hide all yarn tails.
